Leading the shift to sustainable aviation

AFSN is committed to driving the aviation industry toward a more sustainable future by embedding sustainability at the core of its operations and facilitating environmentally responsible practices. The company's Sustainability Strategy focuses on reducing carbon emissions, increasing the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and expanding the availability of SAF to not just airlines but also non-flying corporate organizations aiming to lower their carbon footprint. Additionally, AFSN is dedicated to reducing its own operational CO2 emissions, ensuring that sustainability is integrated across all levels of its business.

Promoting the adoption of SAF in the aviation industry

At the heart of AFSN’s strategy is its commitment to scaling the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is a biofuel that reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel, making it one of the most impactful ways to decarbonize air travel. AFSN is leading the way in making SAF readily available at Norwegian airports, ensuring that airlines operating in the region have access to this cleaner fuel. By offering SAF locally — not through global mass balance systems — AFSN guarantees that SAF is physically used in Norwegian aviation operations, providing direct CO2 reductions.

AFSN collaborates closely with Shell Aviation and St1, two leaders in the global energy and aviation fuel markets, to secure and increase SAF supply. Through these partnerships, AFSN is actively working to promote the transition to SAF within the aviation industry by:

By taking this proactive approach, AFSN not only helps airlines comply with current regulations but also influences the broader aviation market to embrace sustainable fuels, contributing to industry-wide decarbonization efforts.

Making SAF Accessible for Non-Flying Corporations

In addition to airlines, AFSN is actively extending the benefits of SAF to non-flying corporate organizations that want to reduce their Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Scope 3 emissions refer to the indirect emissions generated by a company’s value chain, including business travel. For corporations that rely heavily on air travel, SAF offers a powerful tool to significantly lower these emissions.

AFSN’s strategy involves making SAF available for corporate travel, even for organizations that do not operate their own aircraft. By offering SAF as an option for business flights, AFSN enables corporations to:

AFSN’s direct supply of SAF to Norwegian airports ensures that the carbon reduction benefits are real and measurable, giving corporations confidence that their investment in sustainable travel directly impacts their emissions footprint.

We are committed to reduce our own CO2 emissions

As part of the Sustainability Strategy, AFSN is not only focused on helping the aviation industry reduce emissions but is also taking significant steps to reduce its own CO2 footprint. AFSN’s internal sustainability efforts include:

Transitioning to renewable fuels
AFSN is actively converting its fleet of vehicles, including Into Plane (ITP) refuelling trucks, from conventional diesel to Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a renewable diesel alternative. This transition is expected to reduce operational CO2 emissions by up to 80%.

Electrification of ground support equipment
AFSN is exploring the electrification of its ground support equipment and refuelling vehicles. While electrification technology is still developing in this sector, AFSN is working on future-proofing its operations by investing in electric vehicle options and collaborating with airport authorities to ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place.

Compensating for employee travel emissions
As part of its commitment to reducing its own carbon footprint, AFSN has taken the proactive step of purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to compensate for the CO2 emissions generated by its employees when traveling for business purposes. By directly investing in SAF for business travel, AFSN ensures that its internal operations align with the same sustainability goals it promotes for the wider aviation industry, reinforcing its dedication to leading by example in the transition to lower emissions.

Reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions
AFSN has set clear targets to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. By improving energy efficiency in its facilities, procuring renewable electricity, and transitioning to low-carbon fuels for its vehicles, AFSN is on track to reduce its direct emissions significantly by the end of 2024.

These efforts not only align with AFSN’s broader sustainability goals but also reflect its leadership in implementing immediate, measurable actions to minimize its environmental impact.

Supporting Infrastructure and Market Development for SAF

To support the growing demand for SAF, AFSN is also working on the infrastructure necessary to expand SAF distribution and usage. This includes:

AFSN’s strategy is not only about compliance but about influencing the entire aviation sector to prioritize sustainability. By actively engaging with stakeholders and facilitating SAF availability, AFSN is setting a new standard for how aviation fuel suppliers can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of both the industry and its related sectors.

AFSN’s Sustainability Strategy is a multi-faceted approach aimed at promoting the widespread use of SAF, reducing the company’s own operational emissions, and influencing both airlines and non-flying corporations to adopt sustainable practices. By making SAF accessible to a wide range of stakeholders and investing in the infrastructure to support its use, AFSN is positioning itself as a leader in the push toward a cleaner, more sustainable aviation future.
